What students say
★★★★★
A great Jiu Jitsu team to be a part of. Extremely welcoming and family oriented environment. Best competition team on island. But there's a place for everyone to learn, to grow and have fun. Led by two very skilled black belt instructors that build a culture of improvement. Kids and adults can be part of the team. Absolutely recommend this place.
★★★★★
Highly recommend this awesome and family oriented Dojo! My kids started their BJJ journey back in 2018 here and continued on to another wonderful gym when we moved back Stateside in 2020. We moved back on island last year and both kiddos were excited to go back to training and see Senseis and new friends. Looking forward to more competition travels and memories with the BJJO Sakamoto family!

This gym is a family atmosphere. The coaches are awesome, and the professor is truly excellent. Great for children and adults. My children absolutely love the training sessions and Professor Ivan.
Head Coach · Founder
Born in Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon, Ivan grew up in a jiu-jitsu family alongside his brother Fredson Paixão, a five-time world champion. He earned his black belt in December 2008. After moving to Okinawa with his wife Arine, he started the island's first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team, teaching on the US bases, then opened the Sakamoto Dojo in Okinawa City to give the team a home and open the doors to locals.
Ivan still competes in the Master black belt divisions and coaches across the dojo and the three base locations. He teaches in Portuguese, Japanese and English, which is how a room of Okinawan kids, Brazilian expats and American service members all follow the same lesson.
Black Belt · Adults Coach
Arine earned her black belt under Ivan Sakamoto and leads the adult program at the dojo, teaching both Fundamentals and Advanced classes. She coaches in English, Japanese and Portuguese, so whichever language you think in, the instruction lands.
Black Belt · Fundamentals and Kids Coach
Rodrigo earned his black belt under Ivan Sakamoto. He runs the Tuesday and Thursday morning classes, teaches evening Fundamentals, and coaches the kids program, which makes him the first coach many BJJO students ever meet.
Black Belt · Advanced and No-Gi Coach
Anthony received his black belt in 2023 at the age of 24. He teaches the Adult Advanced and No-Gi classes and coaches the kids program, bringing a competitor's pace to the advanced room and patience to the youngest students.
